I really like how we’ve handled Yoro this season. He was quality last year but had a bit of a sophomore slump this season, so we took him out of the spotlight and managed his minutes, and now he’s stepping up with a bit more confidence, albeit with the expected mistake every now and again.

At one point it seemed like Heaven had overtaken him in the pecking order too, who himself had some dodgy moments this year but bounced back. We’ve got two solid young CBs and hopefully our three experienced ones don’t get injured at the same time again so the youngsters can continue to grow naturally rather than being thrown into the deep end and being forced to stay there even if they need a break.

  2. I got downvoted for saying this at the time, but if you utilize a Rio, or Van Dijk, or Varane, the same way Amorim utilized Yoro, they’d all struggle as well.

These are profiles who excel at defending space; picking and choosing when to commit. You can’t suddenly place them near the touchline and ask them to be aggressive higher up the pitch, that’s simply not their game.

Don’t think it’s a coincidence we saw Shaw & Mazraoui—two traditional fullbacks—do better in that wide centre back role.

  3. I remain unconvinced. We need to see a lot more aggression and muscle from him, and a huge improvement in how he deals with the ball in the air.

He’s a young player, so that might all come, but we spent a lot of money on someone who was supposed to be ready to play (we only signed De Ligt after Yoro got injured in pre-season), and he still seems ill-equipped for regular Premier League football.

  4. I think people forget just how young 20 years of age is for a centreback at a top club.

It’s a position you don’t really start coming into your own in until you get older and have lots of experience playing top flight football week in and week out under your belt. It’s not like playing on the wing where being raw and inexperienced can actually sometimes be a bit of a positive as you offer something different compared to more over-coached players.

There’s a lot he can add to his game, but I think it’s a sign of how good he is when people talk about him as if he were a 24 year old with loads of senior football under his belt.

Just compare the difference in conversation around him and Heaven, where Heaven is only like a year younger than him.

  5. Doing well for a very young, scrawny CB that came from the French league in his teens. It’ll take a few years to grow both physically and in experience. There are going to be mistakes made.
