We’d go on to win the first division this season after a 3-0 win in this game all but confirmed it.
It was the clubs 50th season of competitive football, our Golden Jubilee, our 20th consecutive season in the top flight and most importantly our most successful year up to that point. Our highest home attendance that season was 75,043 vs Wolves.
Our average home gate attendance was 48,307 which would be the highest in the first division that season. The club with no history and plastic fans topping the attendance of the first division and taking the trophy home, 72 years ago.
