Jamie Carragher analysis for Newcastle’s goal against Chelsea cites failure of modern day defenders to adapt to marking patterns as reason for goal. Fofana fails to mark Gordon whilst Chalobah and James mix up who they’re marking and leave a Newcastle passing option wide open.

He is right about Reece and Trev but Fofana really seemed like he just couldn’t be bothered running after Gordon. It was so infuriating watching it because Fofana has great recovery pace and could have easily kept Gordon from being wide open for the tap in.

  2. I think this is where if you have a top centre back like Thiago Silva in the squad, they can be the player that adapts and fixes mistakes like this

Even under Tuchel the amount of errors Silva covered for with his exceptional defensive awareness was ridiculous

Nobody in our centre back line has that at all

Don’t think this requires a pundit to break down. Any football fan can see and saw it in real time. Pathetic from so called professional footballers.

Can’t stand Jamie but he was absolutely correct. Players don’t adapt in game and just look at each other as if it’s always someone else’s job when things go wrong. Fofana throwing his hands up after jogging back was terrible behaviour. You can only do that if you’ve just bust a gut to get back and have just been beaten for pace

Again: no vocal leader to tell people what to do.

How many times have we been over this? No defence can function without a proper, vocal leader (especially CB). None.

Same thing happened during the Burnley match. There is a problem of communication an assignment on out balls after corners and set pieces and if our keepers / coaches aren’t paying attention or guiding the defenders who are back other teams are going to continue to exploit this.

There’s a saying we used in the military: keep it simple, stupid!

When you overcomplicate things, you run the risk of things not being done properly.

You’re dealing with 23-24 year old footballers. These aren’t people well known for their intelligence or concentration. Hell, who can blame them being that rich and successful at their age. However, the board and manager should be more mindful of who their audience is. Trying to overcomplicate things to footballers is a recipe for disaster. No offence to any footballers, we do love you.

  8. The problem in this play was the press. Garnacho was trying to get someone to pick him up as the ball shifted over. No one did.

The defenders were out of shape due to the speed at which they went from one pass to a wide open dribble right at them. They needed to do much better in their shape. I just hate that everyone is focusing on the wrong end of the play.

Spot on. Bad instruction and planning.

Also similar is players refusing to go head the ball away at corners. Just fucking head it. Burnley equaliser a good example.

Rosenior was complaining about a non penalty (which wasn’t one) on Palmer but forgot Reece yanking over a Newcastle player at a corner.

Three bad games on the bounce for Rosenior.

  10. Modern day defenders? I’ve seen clubs at every level make this mistake over my lifetime lol.

Fofanas lack of running right there is going to kill him with fans, he gave up completely on trying. Even if you know you’re not touching the ball man, show the fan that you’ll at least try to make the effort a little harder for Gordon to score. What he did was basically guarantee them the goal and immediately put his hands up in frustration like others were at fault. Yes Reece and chal messed that up crossing wires on who they’re marking, but still man, ya don’t give up and let the guy walk it into goal. That is immaturity at its finest and a central theme to this team period, between the red cards and the lapses of concentration it just shows how bad we lack a true leader to calm this team down. But blue co just say we are building one of the best teams around, sure as fuck doesn’t look like that when your backline can make a stupid mistake any game , no matter the opponent. Our cb pairing is a joke, and it’s not been close to being fixed. Arsenal have like 3 cbs that walk into this team, same with city. People laugh at Harry maguire all the time, he’d be a starter here. We are awful at clearing the ball off corners to suppress further danger, we are terrible at defending long throw ins at our goal.. this team will continue to give these kinds of goals up until you get center backs that are vastly and I mean vastly smarter than what we have. Chal and Wes are solid players, but they shouldn’t be starters for Chelsea today. Sadly those are the best two options we have healthy cause it gets so much worse when you watch Badi, tosin play. At this point I’d rather see sarr and achempong start cause truly can it get worse?

  12. It used to be called reading the game. You identify potential danger, where a player might play the ball and you position yourself to be in the best place defensively, or if your team has the ball, where you can be an option for a pass, etc.

At the end of the day, Carragher is a twat. But, I feel like as an analyst he has more good moments than bad. He knows his stuff.

He’s right though I disagree with him saying Fofana has to “do something for himself”. He is clearly covering 2 players…if Chalobah or James just left the guy to help, then we’re good. Yea, maybe Fofana goes in front of that guy and it’s just a harder pass to get it to Gordon, but Gordon is 100% left open if Fofana covers for James/Chalobah. It’s a lose-lose for him.

Fofana was super lazy afterwards and that’s inexcusable so that doesn’t excuse that.

I really can’t believe Trev isn’t considered the main culprit for the goal when he pressed forward and out to the left wing leaving half the pitch unguarded.

Completely amateur defending and positioning, regardless if he’s tasked with marking the striker. You simply don’t evacuate the space you’re tasked with defending.

  16. Fofana is one of the players I really want gone from the club tbh. Crazy wages, seems to of had more injuries than games, lack consistency from game to game- I’ve just never had a great feeling about him and the Newcastle game really was the last straw for me.
