And the goalkeeper says it is not the first time he has thanked them in recent weeks.

Verbruggen appreciated the protection he received in a 1-0 win at Sunderland which gave the Seagulls a second successive away shut-out.

As in the 2-0 win at Brentford, his most demanding save, somewhat ironically amid so much good defending, came after a lapse by a colleague.

This time Yankuba Minteh skyed an attempted clearance which led to a header which Verbruggen saved well, low to his left.

On one occasion when he was beaten, he was pleased to see Lewis Dunk clear from right in front of goal.

But, again, he had every reason to support all the work ahead pf him as Albion ground out a precious result.

It was only the second 1-0 win for the Seagulls in 80 league and cup games under Fabian Hurzeler and the first since their success in the North East at Newcastle early last season.

Verbruggen told The Argus: “The clean sheet is very important, I think.

“Obviously, if you score one goal, then the clean sheet will get you the win, and I think it was a big shift from the whole team, from everybody, a big, big effort they put in.

“We didn’t concede a lot of chances, which is again a big compliment to the boys that I think I’ve made quite a couple of times in the last couple of games.

“So that’s something we can build on and something very positive and the next step for us is to kill these games a little bit earlier.

“But, if we don’t do that, then to get them over the line like this is a bit compliment to the boys.”
