    ON THIS DAY 2025:

Newcastle’s form had been uninspiring since their 4-0 aggregate defeat of Arsenal to reach the League Cup Final.

On the Monday evening before the cup final, Newcastle travelled to the London Stadium to play Graham Potter’s West Ham.

It was not a free-flowing game, but Hammers keeper Areola had to make some impressive saves to keep Newcastle at bay before half-time.

The winner came with the best passing move seeing Tonali sweep a first time pass to Barnes, who attempted a shot which came back to him, before clipping a beautiful cross for captain Bruno to toe-poke in from close range.

The away end I was lucky enough to be in, erupted as their captain kissed the badge after scoring what would prove to be the winner.

Newcastle held on for a vital victory after a few weeks of key injuries and suspensions.

This win was a huge boost in what would prove to be a historic weekend in the capital…

From memory this was an awful game which had us thinking how are we going to beat the league leaders in a cup final if that’s the level we’re showing in the game prior. Obviously we all know what happened in the end.
