  1. The problem with Trent is he’s a man without a real position. A lot of people have said he should play in midfield. The problem with that is he not only lacks defensive awareness. But his feet are not quick enough to play in congested tight spaces. And as a right back he’s a massive defensive liability as we saw once again today on full display. The reality is Trent can ping a pass with time and space. But in order to do so he needs to operate as a sort of quasi hybrid midfielder in a diamond formation. Playing somewhere between a midfielder and fullback. But in reality he doesn’t have the right set of tools to be either a midfielder or fullback.

  2. Cancelo is better. His problem is solely mental. He'll walk around and not bother about defending. One v. one, he's fairly good. At City, his mainly problem was switching off.

  3. Are we deadass? Cancelo is one of the best fullbacks of the 21st century, while Trent can't sprint to save his life. I'm not saying Trent is a bad player, because his passing is great, but he really can't defend.

  4. Cancelo is better in defending and he can do whatever Trent does in going forward and plus he’s a better dribbler, Aldo more versatile.

  5. This narrative is so overrated when it comes to Trent's being bad at defending.
His defensive ability was MASSIVELY underrated because it was polarised by the position and instructions Klopp asked of him. He was the main creative outlet for Klopp, and often got caught out because of where he was instructed to be on the pitch.

When Slot came in and told the fullbacks to play more conservatively, to stay deeper, and told them to concentrate on defending first…
When he passed creative responsibility on to the midfield, Trent actually had some of the best defensive stats in the league🤷‍♂️

The narrative about his defending was only there because on the teamsheet he was a defender, so he was judged as a defender, but judging him on that would have been similar to judging KDB on how bad he is defensively. KDB was the creative focal point of City, and players around him done the defensive work for him. That's what Trent was for Liverpool and the midfield/rest of the defence did his defending for him. But unfortunately he was on paper a RB, so he was judged on that!

But as I say, when Trent was told to just be a traditional RB by Slot, he wasn't exposed defensively anywhere near as much! Simply because his positioning had him ready to defend rather than running back chasing attackers and being out of energy by the time he got back. Either that or having the ball played over his head because he was in the 8 position and it looking like it's his fault for bad positioning, when really it was Klopp's instructions!

Long story short, he isn't anywhere near as bad at defending as the media makes out when he's actually playing in a defensive position! He was part of a solid defence last season when Liverpool won the league. He was a champion as a RB twice, plus champions league winner along with 2 finals.

The lad was extremely successful as one of the best creative players of his generation, and Liverpool have fallen off a cliff without him and his match winning moments that so often pulled them from defeat or draws to getting more points.
He deserves endless amounts more respect than he gets from the whole footballing world.

  6. trent is one of the worst defenders in modern times in that position, like of dani alves and marcelo were also not really that elite defensively but they did the job while being expectional while attacking, trent on other hand is a liability in defense so as long he doesn't provide insane assists going forward (which he isn't doing at RM) he shouldn't be playing.

  7. Gerrard was a star player but with less positioning awareness that made the manager Rafa to bring in Macherano and Alonso to do the Gerrard's defending work. 😊
