  1. After the second leg, we will have played against them, in the Champions League, 13 time in the past 6 years.

So we knocked them out twice and they knocked out thrice, it’s our turn to knock them out then.

The only thing wilder than having us 5x in a row is managing to face Liverpool AND Chelsea 3x in a row. That’s crackers.

  4. Now let’s see how many yellow cards the referee didn’t give, like Casemiro’s scissor foul from behind on KDB

  5. I know it’s since pep arrived but we played Madrid in 2016 too. 7 times in 11 years sounds wild but honestly it doesn’t feel that bad.

  6. I hate Real Madrid, mostly because a lot of their players have giant egos, but in part because the refs let them get away with blatant fouls when they play at the Bernabeu.

I still have twinges of PTSD from the semifinals in 2022, when we had a 2-goal lead with ~15 minutes left in the second leg at the Bernabeu. Pep had subbed on defensive reinforcements to try to run out the clock. Ederson kept kicking long, ceding possession back to RM, who mounted attack after attack and scored two goals in quick succession. After the tying goal went in, the camera panned to a closeup of Rodri, who looked absolutely mortified. In extra time, it was game over when RM won a penalty for a handball by Laporte. Talk about City snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

Of course, City curb stomped Real Madrid at the Etihad in 2023, probably the most satisfying game City has played in recent years. But Real Madrid fouled City with impunity in the first leg. The refs did nothing to punish Carvajal for repeatedly fouling Grealish. He could have taken a piggy back ride on Grealish’s back and not gotten a yellow. And of course Rudiger has always been a violent cunt who gets away with fouls.

Then in 2024, Real Madrid just parked the bus in the second leg at the Etihad, with Ancelotti saying after the game that Real Madrid couldn’t win the tie at the Etihad and their only hope to advance was to go through on penalties. The strategy worked, in part because Courtois was a much more intimidating shotstopper than Ederson ever was.

Oh well, let’s hope this year bears closer resemblance to 2023 than 2022. Most likely City will again deal with refs who put their hands on the scale to help Real Madrid, sort of like the PGMOL has done lately to help Arsenal and hinder City in the title race.

  7. We need to get back at them for the 4-in-a-row season. That 3-3 at the Bernabeu should’ve been 3-1 for us had we not gotten incredibly unfortunate

I’d like to think we would’ve won the UCL that year too, had we got past them
