On Tuesday 17th February, Redditch United faced Solihull Moors in the Birmingham Senior County Cup. Both sides named strong lineups, with the majority of the Moors players being regulars in the National League (two Leagues above Redditch United).

So it was already a tough ask for the Reds, yet a quite remarkable story unfolded…

Redditch United took an early, 3-minute lead, through Jack Loughran (our loanee from Shrewsbury Town), before our goalkeeper, Tyrese Warmington (on loan from Birmingham City) was sent off in the 10th minute. We hadn't named a substitute goalkeeper on the bench, so we faced over 80 minutes of football against a Step 1, full-time, strong Solihull Moors side – all with a midfielder in goal, who had never played goalkeeper in his life…

It turned into an incredible night of teamwork, defiance & a masterclass from Matty Warburton in goal, who will forever go down as a Redditch United folk hero.

  1. What a crazy moment in football, huge respect to that midfielder for stepping up. These unexpected stories make the game even more beautiful and unforgettable for fans.

  2. Kudos to him. Reminds me of Giroud goalkeeping for Milan after Maignan was sent off in final minutes and we won that
