    ON THIS DAY 2005:

An amazing day as United inflicted a rare defeat on the Champions-to-be and ruined their dreams of a quadruple.

Our own hopes of eventually lifting silverware were preserved mainly thanks to slices of good fortune that appeared as frequently as the flurries of snow fell on the pitch.

After Patrick Kluivert had headed us in front, Mateja Kezman hit the underside of our bar when he had beaten Shay Given all ends up.

But it was in the second period that the tie seemed destined to be ours when an injury to Wayne Bridge saw the visitors reduced to ten men with 48 minutes gone.

Jose Mourinho had gambled with a triple substitution at the break but that backfired almost immediately when Bridge fell awkwardly after a tackle by Alan Shearer.

As Bridge was being taken to the RVI with a suspected broken ankle, his colleagues Carlo Cudicini and Damien Duff collided, the latter hobbling his way to full time.

As United stuttered against effectively nine men, the Blues were reduced further when Cudicini was red-carded for upending Shola Ameobi as he rounded the visiting ‘keeper.(nufc.com)
