    ON THIS DAY 2000:

United hosted the Manchester Reds at St James Park, with the team having only lost one game since winning the treble last season.

New boy Duncan Ferguson opened the scoring with an utterly stunning strike, pivoting a knock down, before smashing it in the top corner with his left boot.

Not one to be outdone, Shearer added a glorious second from outside of the area, before adding a late third.

Roy Keane got his first, but not his last red card at St James’ Park after a predictably heinous challenge.

Three goals, three points, and a clean sheet against the treble holders had the Geordies celebrating a brilliant result.

“I mean, with this spirit, and the quality we have, we really shouldn’t be looking downwards now, we should be looking upwards.” Sir Bobby Robson
