Albert Grønbaek has explained why his time at Southampton was ‘a complete disaster’ for everyone involved.
The 24-year-old has been speaking to BILD. He’s looking to get back on track at Hamburg after joining them on loan until the end of the season.
The German side are his third loan club since he joined Stade Rennais for €15m in 2024. He only lasted a couple of months before joining Southampton in January last year.
That lasted until the end of the season before another loan to Genoa was agreed. That was cancelled on January 30th so he could move to Germany with Hamburg.
His short stint at Southampton was undeniably the least successful of those loan deals. He managed just five appearances for the Saints, totalling 147 minutes. It was a similar story at Genoa, where he managed six appearances totalling 226 minutes.
Grønbaek’s time at Southampton had given him a shot at the Premier League but he instead managed four appearances in the league, losing three, before a tendon irritation left him out for six games. He was then left out of the squad for three games before being sent back to Stade Rennais.
Now he wants to restart at HSV and knows why they suit him better than Southampton and Genoa.
“Because their style of play didn’t suit me,” he said when asked why neither move worked out.
“HSV tries to find a creative solution on the pitch, as we even saw against Bayern. That’s more my style of play.”
In reality, it was perhaps down to a little more than playing styles. Grønbaek now again has the chance to kickstart his career.
