  1. Minutes applause are for paying respects when someone’s died, not for when someone’s 20 million pound move to Crystal Palace falls through

I don’t think we can hold him wanting to leave against him. He likely didn’t come to that decision without input from the club about his future here.

  3. A minutes applause for a player that is gutted he couldn’t leave our football club? Embarrassing if that happens

  4. Honestly the situation is a mixture of everything said. He’s a professional, the move didn’t go through, he’s still a Everton player and he can have a part to play, there should be no ill will at all.

Rather than an applause at 7 minutes. How about we just give him a bigger cheer when he’s announced in the squad? And just back him like we do all or most of our players.

I think an applause at 7 mins is a bit weird tbh.

  5. Somewhere in the middle. We should support him as he’s an Everton player, but these kind of gestures can seem extremely lame if there isn’t a large percentage of involvement. I would hope there is a large cheer when his name is first announced and maybe a lot of us need to reconsider the stick we give players, however he and others still need to be accountable for errors and poor play, just in a constructive way.

  6. They make it sound like his wanting to leave was all him and we weren’t shoving him out the door as soon as we saw the cash.

We pay him £1.3m a year to do a job. He should get on and do the job he’s paid more than adequately to do.

  8. If we gave him a round of applause then that would be embarrassing. I’m all for being human and sympathising with the player, but the only thing we should be doing is cheering his name when it’s announced and cheering him on when he scores.

  9. If you take football/money out of it and put yourself in his position, he was offered a new job, accepted the new position and had put plans in place to move him and his family a few hundred miles to a different part of the country.

He’d probably said his goodbyes to staff & friends, made all the arrangements and been fully expecting to wake up the next day and start his new job.

Then it all falls through with no comms from the new place…

Give him the opportunity and support to show he is still welcome and can still be a part of the team.

  10. Feel bad for the fella but I’m sick of hearing about it now. I’ll give a slightly bigger clap and cheer at the Bournemouth game when they read out his name from the team sheet.

  11. As people have said, Everton pay him a lot of money to do a job and he did that job and helped us survive. However this season he just hasn’t been bothered and not up to scratch (hence the reason the club tried to sell him) was it error? or did Crystal Palace see the past few games footage and looked for an “out”

He got his applause when he helped us stay up, he doesn’t need an applause because Everton and Crystal Palace no longer wanted him. If we applaud him then it’s time to remove NSNO and accept the mediocrity that we have become

A good player will use this as motivation to become the best player and show Crystal place and other clubs what they missed out on. If we need to applaud to stop him being “sad” and hopefully see some improvement then it’s a big indication again why the club wanted him gone

  12. He’s an Everton player, he’s been instrumental in our premier league survival and he seems an honestly nice guy. Should be getting a big cheers and applause at least when his name is read off the team sheet.

He had his bags packed because we were about to get twenty million for him? It’s not like we were clambering to keep him, he wasn’t disrespecting us at all by leaving, it was win win for both parties & im proud of the club’s response to this.

  14. Just play football. Boo hoo you didn’t get the job you wanted. Happens to people not on £50k a week all the time. What a precious little flower he must be. Man the fuck up.

In fact, he wanted to leave, why in the shitting fuck would this be applauded the fucking melt should be grateful hes allowed to pull on a shirt.

Im guessing now is the point someone tells me im being harsh and that he lost a kid or his mum died or a hamster escaped from his Crosby mansion….

I like McNeil and feel that Palace were shitty to him in terms of their communication. (Deals falling through is common, but ghosting him was awful).
Clapping on 7 minutes is absolutely absurd. He’s not dead.

This is getting as bad as when the reds opened up a book of condolences for Van Dijk after Pickford fairly challenged him.

McNeil’s not dead and he wanted to leave. Some people need to get a grip

Found that whole Insta melodrama from his wife, writing novellas from their mansion pleeing sympathy from working people who pay for everything she has, to be extremely unprofessional. They have lives we can only dream of, get over yourselves and continue to bear the utter inhumanity of accepting another few million off Everton until the next transfer window in a few months.

Clap if you like on 7, all very meh either way. Far greater issues in the world than Dwight McNeil not moving to London with an extra few million in the pocket to add to his already vast wealth.

  18. I am a bit fed up of this idea that just because he’s a professional footballer he can’t suffer from any mental health blips.

But calling for a minutes applause is a bit of a stretch. Yeah, give his name a bigger cheer when the team’s are announced and get behind him if/when he gets on the pitch but leave it at that.

Like others have already said, hopefully he takes this as a chance to put himself back in the shop window, as it were, and show us and any other club that he’s still capable of playing at this level.
