Hammers head coach Nuno Espírito Santo spoke to the media after his side’s 3-2 defeat to Chelsea.

The East London club would have been full of confidence coming into the game, having won their previous three games in all competitions.

It was a dream start for West Ham as they took the lead after only seven minutes. Jarrod Bowen’s cross snuck all the way through, misleading Robert Sanchez in the Chelsea goal.

They then made it two 10 minutes before the break, after Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s cutback was met by Crysencio Summerville, who powered the ball into the back of the net.

However, the second half was the complete opposite. Chelsea substitutes João Pedro and Marc Cucurella both scored headed goals to level the score. Then, in the 92nd minute, Enzo Fernández made history by scoring to make it 3-2, meaning Chelsea had won a Premier League game from two goals behind for the first time.

Tempers flared late on, which saw West Ham defender Jean Clair Todibo get shown a red card for putting his hands around the neck of João Pedro.

The loss means the Hammers are now six points from safety with 14 games remaining.

“We are disappointed, sad, frustrated. A game that we started really well. We played really good the first half, and when you score two goals away from home, it should be our game.

“We defended well [first half]. We were in control, and every time we went forward, we combined and scored two beautiful goals. That’s the frustration to not be able to sustain our performance through the game.

“We knew that Chelsea were going to react, but we should have done much better to defend our own box. We defended bad, we should’ve done better. I think we could have avoided the second half, the crosses into our box, of course, there were numbers there, but we had bodies to control better. We should’ve kept the same idea as the first half.

“When Chelsea scored their first goal, the wide areas were not in control, wingers were not able to control their full-backs, which would’ve allowed Malick [Diouf] and Aaron [Wan-Bissaka] to be stronger. We have to defend the box when they crossed, and we didn’t.

“There’s a lot of football to be played. As long as we can keep maintaining the levels of performance as we did in the first half, we’re going to win matches, but this match is, with all respect that I have for Chelsea, it should have been our game.

“We have to react this week, prepare well against a tough team that’s going to be Burnley, so we have to prepare properly.”
