After a 0-1 win at St. Mary’s in the first leg of the semi-final, Newcastle had to only not lose to be in their first Wembley cup final of the millennium.
The pressure of the evening lifted early as local lad Sean Longstaff scored in five minutes.
He then added a second after an excellent move in the first half, and truly was the hero of the night at St James’ Park.
Southampton did get one back, and GuimarĂ£es was sent off late in the game for violent conduct, but this was all a side note on an unbelievable evening. As the final whistle blew, the reality set in for the Toon. They were going to their first domestic Cup final since 1999.
