GarethAKitchener on January 20, 2026 12:00 pm ON THIS DAY 1996: Paul Kitson opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a superb header from Beardsley’s cross. A header the absent Sir Les would have been proud of. The Trotters midfield contained ex-Mag Scott Sellars who received a warm reception. They equalised ten minutes later with a neat free kick from outside of the area that was headed in by Bergsson. The winner came later in the first half from a corner kick, as Peacock headed the ball for Beardsley to volley home his hundredth Toon goal. These three points sent Keegan’s Mags twelve points clear at the top of the table.
