  1. We have to be bringing someone else in on a permanent then? It doesn’t make any sense to loan him out

  2. Not too badly, he has served a purpose but doesn’t really fit anywhere so to speak if this enables us to get another proper forward in then I am all for it lets see what happens a Left wing and a striker and we could be in a great place to push on this year

I’m gonna need to see a pretty good signing to cheer me up about this. If someone has to go I get why it’s Donny, the system he works best in we so scarcely use.

Hate this. Been really happy with Malen this season. What a stupid deal. I’m guessing this is PSR at play again. You’ll get nowhere if you have to keep selling your players.

  5. If by all the accounts that he was a top 5 earner for us then this is great business, you can’t be paying people that money to sit on the bench

  6. Year to the day since we brought him in as well, apparently.

Thanks for the short and sweet memories Malen. All of those finishes from the exact same incredibly tight angle shan’t be forgotten.

  7. Can someone explain to me, does it actually help PSR and SCR when we don’t really make profits on players? Everything gets made about selling youth products as they count as “pure profit”. But we signed Donny for €25m and this if it goes through is €3-4m profit? When you factor wages we’ve paid him for 12 months it’s definitely a net loss but for the sake of PSR does a sale go through our books as a 25m deal or is it only the profit that counts over the 3 year period?

Also happy anniversary of signing for us Don

  8. Have visions he’ll come back to haunt us in the Europa league…

My guess is that he left Dortmund hoping for more game time but still seems to be second choice to Watkins. From our perspective I’ve seen rumours he’s on a sizeable salary for a squad player so we’re probably looking for PSR efficiency.

    In Unai we trust anyway.

  9. Genuinely baffled by this. Absolutely makes no sense unless we’ve got a replacement striker coming in.

Stupid decision, only striker back up we’ve got, half the minutes of Ollie but the same goals and offers us something else. This club baffles me sometimes.

PSR. Protecting the status quo. Now. Then. Forever.

If you want to kick on, you need bench players of the quality of Malen. Look in that side panel and you will see he’s scored or assisted 9 goals in the first half of the season. why should it matter how much you pay someone – if the bank/owner is happy to keep the lights on, then that’s just good negotiating….

It’s simply not possible to compete if Arsenal go out and spend 100 million, man city go out and spend 200 million…and we are selling players!

Not too bothered by this. He’s been a good squad player but if the money’s good and there’s someone coming in the other way there’s plenty of scope for this to be good. He’s hardly been indispensable and he’s not threatening to lock down a first team spot anywhere.

Plus it will quiet some of the noise about him starting over Watkins.

  13. I alway liked the guy. Thought he was getting CL football and got left out of the squad – didn’t complain. He scored goals and always looked lively. Understand why we are letting him go. It’s a pretty big call but also have faith we are getting a good replacement. We got rid of Duran and had a good run after.

Shame because he a was really reliable and one of the few players with proper pace we have

But if he’s not the player Unai needs, and we can make a profit on him, that’s good business. Just hope we’re selling him because we want to, not because we have to

  15. SCR is wages to revenue ratio so this will help that – that’s the metric for European comps.

This sucks. Wouldn’t have been bummed if we shipped out Guessand but Malen has done well for us.

  17. Really liked Malen and wish him the best. Hopefully we have better cover coming in for Watkins and can dump Elliott. UTV

  18. So does this mean we had the 50m ferran Torres bid accepted? If so then this would make the malen move a bit more palatable I guess?

  19. Shame this , I like Malan , BUT if he’s one of our highest earners and plays 20 mins per game .. that’s not really good VFM. We need, and this statistically isn’t easy to do, have players like Malan but on wages like Barkley. Can’t see a player sat on the bench earning 130K+ pw, that’s not sustainable for our club (based on generated revenue , and not how much our owners are willing to throw away)

  20. Bit gutted about this, perhaps he wasn’t the right fit but I thought he took his opportunities really well, wish him all the best

  21. Character-Key7538 on

It’s shit and in a perfect world we probably keep him, but clearly we need to move wages around and Emery doesn’t fancy him enough to protect him so…

Does put pressure on us to get someone in ASAP though. Have to trust the club have something lined up.

  22. Yeah this is shit.

Can we all spare a thought for what an utter professional Donyell has been in his time with us, though? The only proper signing we made last January amidst another 3 players coming in on loan – all of whom got CL squad inclusion and regular PL game time while he was left at home/benched.

Despite all that he never complained publicly, never acted shitty, took it on the chin, continued to train fully and, to my mind, made himself a really valuable squad player once he started getting game time this season.

I think he’s been a quality attacking player for us this season and I’ll be really said to see him go, but as others have pointed out – he’s an expensive wage inclusion if he’s not getting played/doesn’t fit Emery’s system.
