ON THIS DAY 2023: Newcastle United 2 – 0 Leicester City – Big Dan Burn scores first Toon goal to take us to semi-finals

ON THIS DAY 2023:

Newcastle hosted Leicester City in the Carabao Cup quarter final, with both teams in contrasting form. The Magpies were third in the league, and St James’s Park was hungry for a big cup performance.

They were not to be disappointed, as the Magpies dominated and pressed the Foxes from the first whistle. The only thing they couldn’t find was the back of the net, as Joelinton and Longstaff missed easy chances.

It looked like it might be a day where Newcastle didn’t get what they deserved, until defender Burn ran on to Joelinton’s pass, beat two defenders and slotted a shot into the bottom corner. Cometh the hour, cometh the man.

The stadium exploded as the ex-season ticket holder scored his first goal at the Gallowgate.

Newcastle then added a second, as the impressive Almirón played through Joelinton to score the second and seal the tie.

Although Leicester had late chances, in which ex-Mag Peréz squared a ball to Jamie Vardy who missed an open goal. The tie was always in Newcastle’s hands, and the semi-final awaited.

A fantastic night for Dan Burn, that somehow is best remembered for his dressing room dance, than his first goal for his boyhood club.
