      If Newcastle is like Gelsenkirchen and Liverpool is like Dortmund (so said Klopp), then what are the other city pair-ups between England and Germany?

      Interesting comparison. Gelsenkirchen is a relatively small city (pop. 263,000) in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germanys most populous region with 18m people.

      Although Gelsenkirchen seems small, it’s surrounded by lots of populous towns so it resembles greater London moreso than Newcastle looking at the map.
