Hey it’s Raj from 3CB.

Newcastle’s key acquisition Kieran Trippier broke his left foot vs Aston Villa over the weekend.

According to David Ornstein, Trippier fractured the 5th metatarsal and will undergoe surgery to expedite his return.

Most commonly in these cases, this is a “Jones fracture” in “zone 2” of the 5th metatarsal

Surgery – in which one screw is inserted to stabilize the bone and fracture – is indicated because there’s limited blood supply in this area of the bone and there’s multiple tendon attachments that pull on it as well. This can lead to delayed healing, especially for athletes.

If this is indeed a Jones fracture, Trippier is typically looking at 6-8 weeks but I have seen as soon as 4 weeks with expedited return protocols (although those come with increased risks)

Tough blow for the club & player who were just starting to gain momentum. I’ll keep you updated as we learn more.
