“I was born in Breda, but it’s the things I’ve overcome on my journey from there that have made me the player I am today.”

Virgil van Dijk was a football-obsessed kid playing on cage courts near his southern Holland home.

Years later and with many challenges overcome, he’s a European Champion and recognised as the world’s best defender.

  1. SV REESHOF.
I live 100m from the club he visited. Played 11 years there. I left the club in October and not long after he visited the damn club

  2. His coach's grouse was that he was too "laid back".
Several years later who knew being "laid back" would be his biggest asset.
Virgil cruises through every game like it's nothing, staying in 2nd gear the entire while. Absolute joy to watch him play.
