  1. I don’t understand why Kovac phrased it like “I will bring him down to earth” because it makes it look like Beier made a mistake and the coach now has to discipline him and teach him a lesson. I hope that doesn’t spark any conflict between the players and Kovac because there is generally nothing wrong about what Beier said or about what Kovac says when he is asked about our ambitions.

The thing is that Beier is not the only one who said in the last couple of months that our goal is to win the title. Svensson has spoken about it in after he signed the contract, all the new signings spoke about wanting to win titles and in a video made by Bundesliga where many players from different clubs had to say their hot-take for this season, Emre Can and Adeyemi said “Borussia will win the league” (Karim also said in another interview that his biggest footballing dream is to celebrate a title in the Borsigplatz). I strongly believe that, despite it not being publicly stated, everyone (players, management, coach) works towards winning a trophy.

Now, the thing is that Kovac is kinda right at the end of the day. In the last 2 seasons we struggled to obtain Champions League qualification and we have been incredibily inconsistent. Lately, it looks like we always need a good run after starting bad in the Hinrunde in order to at least have a decent season (and even in the 22/23 season, our title contention was possible due to a good set of games after february, not because we were consistent). The gap between us and Bayern and respectively Leverkusen was huge in the last 2 years.
For the moment, we had 4 games this season, all against much weaker sides. As Kovac said, right now the reality is that we haven’t done aything special and there is no fight for anything at the moment, nobody is fighting either for relegation, the European Cups spots or the title.

In another interview that was taken about a month ago, Kovac said that his purpose is to put the team in a situation where it has guaranteed its participations in the Champions League as early as possible. If at that time we are in a positions where we have a chance at the title, just after that we can talk about it. Furthermore, he said that it could be very realistic for us to win the Pokal. That shows clearly that he is ambitious and wants to win trophies with the club, not the opposite.

Another thing is that stating at the beggining of the season or just after a couple of games that “we want to win the title” doesn’t bring us closer to winning it by any means. Let’s remember that after the 18/19 season, Watzke stated publicly that our objective is to win the league. We have also went big on the transfers and made solid improvements. But, despite all of that, we never made that number of points we made under Favre in 18/19 ever agains. More recently (to be precise, this summer), Atletico Madrid did the same thing we did in the summer of 2019. It is way to early to judge them, but the season clearly did not start well.

To conclude, what I think Kovac wants to implement is a different mentality about winning. As we have seen in many of the previous seasons, the team has always been driven by a very emotional component while being in a good run. When things didn’t go the right way at a moment and we were no longer raiding the good vibes, we falled completely (this could have been seen clearly in many different important moments both in the 18/19 season and the 22/23). He most likely wants to bring a different perspective towards what takes to win things because he has seen that emotionality can’t always take over the finish line. That seems to be according to his character and generally to the core German values he tries to instill in our players and seems to live by. We will see! We have just eliminated a 3rd tier side in the Pokal and made 7 points in 3 games against St. Pauli, Union and Heidenheim. It is just the middle of september. Let’s see how things continue and then we can talk about the title.

  2. Kovac hasn’t criticized Beier for saying what he said. It was in response to a reporter asking him wether he shares this view, which Kovac essentially answered with pointing out that we were 25 points behind Bayern last season.

He finished his statement giving that sentence with a massice smirk, there is nothing to interpret into this, just media stirring bullshit.
