  1. Yunus Musah is definitely one of our best midfielders. He is an amazing linkup guy, has great vision, very good one v one dribbling skills, and is just excellent at possession and transitioning play forward. He also has a great soccer IQ. McKennie, Adams, and Musah complement each other really well. Adams is the defensive rock, Musah is the steady, reliable linkup playmaker, and McKennie is the risk-taking, athletic, offensive guy. Though they each have all of those qualities in different proportions, of course. Musah definitely needs to play more. Hoppe and Horvath both made (certainly in retrospect) terrible decisions transferring to their current clubs, sadly. Hopefully this new year will be better for them and the rest of the USMNT players!

  2. FIFA CAT is back! There are a ton of young Americans that are being wasted, but Musah is being wasted the most at Valencia. Loan or an actual move to some place where he can start in the midfield would be best.

  3. Hi Jake, great video once again. Musah is such an interesting one and clearly has a lot of potential. There is a pattern with Musah though, and this situation at Valencia shows how he can shoot himself in the foot and sabotage his own development if he is not careful.

He appears to lack patience when it comes to carefully weighing up his decisions, and how they could potentially impact him. I’ve read a great article on The Athletic about him, and it detailed his journey. He seems to make what I would deem to be rash decisions, based on a desire to fast track himself in to first/senior team status. I understand that, all players want to play but in some cases you do have to be patient and bide your time before it pays off, which makes me wonder who is advising him.

I know as USMNT fans, this may not be the popular perspective but he had already played for England at youth level 30 times before choosing the US. Gareth Southgate is quoted as saying ‘A team comes in and offers you a senior cap, we understand that is attractive but we are not willing to fast track somebody just to secure them….we are showing all the time there is a pathway for young players… we’d like Yunus to be one of those, we recognise his ability’ this tells me with a bit of time and patience there was a strong possibility he would’ve got a senior call up to England had he been eligible especially as he had already been on the ‘pathway’, which if you follow England will know strengthens your possibilities of being chosen tremendously.

He also did the same thing with Arsenal, left for Valencia as they dangled the first team carrot and now that decision has left him on the bench, had he stayed at Arsenal how may things be panning out for him in say 2-3 yrs time? He is only 19 and there is a strong indication he will turn this around, but making these what appear to be somewhat rash decision in favour of the here and now may impact him long term. I could be wrong though….

  4. Musah is getting limited minutes which I think is fair for the level of his current ability.

He's only 19 and he's definitely been improving year over year. He's not going to be in his prime for four more years and he doesn't look like a La Liga level starter to me. For Musah to be a starter would imply him going down a level in terms of his league IMO.

I'm not even convinced he's a part of our best possible three-man mid-field. I would like to see a RAM midfield of Reyna, Adams, and McKinnie.

This is one of these videos where people talk about the clubs as if they existed to advance the careers of USMNT players. It's the flip side of the idea that all of our players should go to Europe to "get good". The reality is often quite different, because that logic is backwards. You don't go to Europe to get good, but because you are good. You don't get minutes to get good, but because you are good.

  5. Spanish Football doesn't give American players a real chance to play.Musah looks a lot better than most of the midfielders on his team and for him to be stuck on the bench is ridiculous. He and several other American Nationals in Spain need to get out of that league

  6. I'd love to see him in the premier league, his nature as an 8 plus his energy really makes him a good fit for a lot of those teams, but that may be a slight jump for him and he may find himself in a similar situation. I guess from a USMNT perspective it depends on what we do short term. If we keep with having 1 DM and 2 CM then we really need musah playing more at club level. But if we played with 2 DM, like Adams and mckennie as dual 6, and a 10 moving Reyna central, him being a solid option off the bench, then him being developing and being a sub isn't much of an issue I guess. Maybe ligue 1 for a starting job since that league is a bit weaker but still quality, plus it's very attack minded.

  7. Want to see more American players playing for Venezia and would love to see a midfield of Tessmann, Busio, and Musah carving up the Serie A to help Venezia avoid relegation (I know this won’t happen and it’s partly a joke…)

  8. Definitely take a loan if he can. Hopefully it happens and it's a team that will give him a lot of minutes. But why limit it to LA Liga? He speaks English so maybe a team in PL? Perhaps he is not on anyone's radar.

  9. Jumping the gun on this one, I think. As you say, only one of the other mids he's competing with for time is truly far better than him. He's 19. He can win minutes. He has the talent to do it. Valencia is a team in multiple competitions, and that means opportunities for him. Winning a role may be better for his growth than moving. At the very least, I think he needs to consider his move carefully, and keep staying as a very viable option. We can't have him jumping at the first offer, and ending up stalling out like Sargent or Horvath look to be doing.

  10. Musah definitely needs a loan but it doesn't have to be just La Liga. He could get along well in Italy as well in the Serie A. I think he even has an Italian passport so he does have some connection there. Hoppe needs a loan as well so I don't see Hoppe and Musah together at Mallorca.

  11. Agree with this. Everyone knows how crucial it is to get experience playing on game day. Musah is too good to just be benched most of the time. Also, did you mean Stu Holden instead of Taylor Twellman?

  12. Honestly Valencia isn't a club for young dons. Look at Ferran Torres and Kangin Lee. Ferran Torres you might argue that he's only a bench player at city, but he actually has a pretty respectable amount of game time and goal involvement in a star studded city team, which earned him a move away to Barcelona. Kangin Lee won the U-20 world cup golden ball and dragged Korea to the final. What did he get? Bench time and a sprinkle of 10 minute performance here and there. Moved away to Mallorca and now he's been flourishing with Japanese wonderkid Kubo. Musah would be a really nice addition to a young Mallorca team.
