This game ruined Raphaël Varane’s career. Back in August 2020, Real Madrid played their second leg of the Champions League Last 16 at the Etihad against Man City. However, they were missing their captain, Sergio Ramos, due to a suspension, who was a key player and was in great form at the time. Varane was given big responsibility to lead the defensive line. In the 9th minute, Varane already made a huge mistake, giving Raheem Sterling a free goal. Although Karim Benzema pulled one back for Madrid to make it 3-2, Varane made another mistake, giving Gabriel Jesus Man City’s second goal, which led to Madrid’s loss and elimination from the Champions League. Varane had a fantastic career up to this point, winning numerous trophies, but he was never the same after this match, and injuries led to his retirement at only 31 years old.
