Belgium midfielder Axel Witsel said on Sunday (20th November) that he is confident Romelu Lukaku will be back soon, despite the Inter Milan striker is still struggling with a hamstring injury which will force him to miss at least their World Cup opener against Canada on Wednesday (23rd November).

Lukaku, who is Belgium’s first-choice striker, suffered his most recent setback at the end of October, having just returned after two months out with another hamstring injury.

Witsel also reflected on how the 2022 World Cup could be the last one for many players who were part of Belgium’s so-called golden generation, including himself.

International veterans Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard were also selected by Martinez, together with Lukaku and Witsel. All are entering their third World Cup.

Belgium reached their best result in the World Cup with a third-place finish in 2018.

Morocco and Croatia are also in Group F with Belgium and Canada.
