  1. Kinda apt that Southgate should be brought down by a missed penalty.

But hey, England are bottlers on pens. There's not much the manager can do about that.

It's a psychological problem not a football problem. Like vertigo or something.

My policy would be to give the pen to the guy who won it. Given the pressure isn't as great on the winner of the pen. If he misses, he can say 'well I won it', there wouldn't have been a pen if it wasn't for me' .

As in it's his pen to lose, he has ownership of the pen psychologically. Plus a policy of winner of the pen, takes the pen – takes the responsibility from the shoulders of the player. If he misses he can always blame the policy. Face savers in this regard are a positive. Excuses allowing for calmness. The decision is out of the player's hands.

As for penalty shootouts, the players who've had a really great game or tournament, should take the pens, given they've got less to lose psychologically. Once again they have ownership of the pens. Their performance during the game and the tournament excusing their misses in the shootout. Scorers in the game should be encouraged to take pens.

Bringing on subs to take pens, is a bad idea, as they have no ownership on the game. They feel like interlopers on someone else's hard work. Thus the pressure builds. Plus they are like reserve army, entering the action psychologically unprepared. And the manager should always choose the penalty takers, once again taking the decision out of the players hands.

And players no matter how good, should not be designated penalty takers, given they are giving away too much information that the goalies can read. And a player no matter how good should not take two penalties in a game, unless that is if he won the penalties. .

As for training for pens, it should be done with smaller nets, and penalty spots should be a foot back. So when it comes to real penalties, the net is bigger and spot closer creating confidence in the player .

And they say the pressure for pens can't be recreated in training, which is true. But it can be simulated. E.G. a charity sweep-stake could be staged. A penalty competition wherein each pen scored wins ten grand for a player's chosen charity. The final winner of the competition gets 100, 000 grand for his charity. The people from the charities are behind the nets, the press and the TV cameras are encouraged to cover the event.

Then you can see who can or can't handle the pressure. Who allows the fear of letting people down, affect his performance.

You could also run psychological tests on each player, to ascertain anxiety levels. And at an extreme measure, hypnosis could be used to get the players more relaxed for pens. To screen out the crowd and the cameras. To take the high octane drama out of the shootout.

Players should also be encouraged to have a sneering contempt for the audience. Loving the audience too much is often counterproductive in high pressure events. Something how soldiers develop contempt for civvy street. As in forget the civvies, bunch of ungrateful backseat tossers, you're doing this for yourselves and your team-mates.

Patriotism paradoxically is often counterproductive to victory. Makes soldiers overeager and intense, or paralyzed by the fear of defeat.

And I suggest players run up to the spot, not walk. That journey to the penalty spot should be as quick as possible. The kick should be taken quickly too. Don't let the nerves get hold.

  2. Sorry but the only reason why Southgate got to Semis last time around, and a final, is because of England. The reason why they almost beat France, is because of England. And even then, the English bench has a lot to offer. He isnt football smart like other managers, and he doesnt like change. Next world cup is the for England. These are the best players in a long time.

  3. What exactly did England achieve before Southgate arrived? Phenomenal team at reaching the 1/4 finals then getting no further, since the 1966 title there have only been four appearances in the last four of a competition (World Cup or Euros), 2 of these have been with Southgate. It's not that he's a great manager but 1/4 finals is England's level. Anybody who is deluding themselves thinking that Tuchel, Pochettino or Mourinho will turn English players into world beaters must be living the same sort of fantasy as Brexiteers and their trade deals.

  4. Gareth has been outstanding & he'll just get better, he has unfinished business with England, this is just the start. He's achieved so much, all that work he's put in, he has to stay

  5. But, Southgate hasn't won anything as manager of England…..getting to the semis and the final in the Euros is fine, but you have to win the bloody thing. Like club level, it's all about the trophies..

  6. I hope he stays. His calmness and togetherness with the players is creating something different in this England side. He will grow and learn just like the young players will

  7. Southgate needs to look at the cricket test team approach. Since the new coach and Stokes have taken over they have completely changed their approach to being front foot, positive, only think about winning and have transformed the team and results. Southgate doesn’t have this approach, the team always starts so slow, tentatively worrying about the opposition. It almost shows he hasn’t got full confidence in the players, he certainly shows that with the really creative players we have got. Foden only got in after media and public clamouring and Grealish hardly ever plays, and there are others. If he could become more confident then who knows what this team could do! Let’s face it, all the teams in this World Cup have been distinctly average.

  8. “If he was to leave the England job it would be for champions league team” I’m crying 😂 I can’t take these reporters serious

  9. I want Southgate to stay. I think he has made England punch above their weight with clown defenders like Harry Maguire at the back. Even John Stones conceded a clear goal scoring chance against Giroud which Giroud missed. Once we have new and better center backs available, England can do even better

  10. I hope he stays, although we lost against France, that is one of the best knockout perfomances I've seen from England, we deserved to beat a top side. He has had three very good tournaments! Give him the Euros at least!

  11. It is not important who comes who goes becuase English will never lay their hand on trophy. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. You always loose.
    Practise more penalty 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

  12. Head held up high🤣ridiculous this guy has failed at every tournament🤣he was a poor coach who just cruised along thanks to the fact that his squad has a bit of talent. Just like martinez at Belgium ey r just bad coaches

  13. if he doesn't make England Champion in Euro cup and World cup tournaments he should resign and same things should be available for Gregg and USA too.

  14. You guys are hilarious. By the time England wins a trophy Italy is gonna have 4 more world cups, not qualify for 2 and Prince George’s nephew is gonna be king. It ain’t never coming home losersssss. (With that squad and 0 trophies south gate should have been sacked eons ago.
