As regards Areola i feel its time we stopped pissing about. He is a quality keeper, wages? Well we have had Yarmo on more or less that for years and now Zouma, so it can be afforded. And whilst i think players wages are scandalous anyway, its a position that needs nailing down and would rather him than johnstone

Hi Geo….if Leicester win EL Conf, they will enter the Europa League next season. As England can only have 7 max teams in Europe…..maybe only the top 6 will qualify thru the league for European competitions. ……but my understanding is that if Leicester do win the conf……England will be allowed 8 teams….any thoughts. ?……given a big club wins FA Cup.
This is great news. I understand that a lot of fans want Areola to be our number 1. But Fabianski has been the best keeper I've ever seen at West ham in my lifetime. Fabianski rarely has back to back bad games. For every mistake he makes, he also pulls off two or three world class saves and it makes him very hard to drop. It's just fantastic to have two world class keepers at the club.
Other reason to go for Johnstone over Areola (although I hope we don't) is the fact he's English. Nobes retiring at end of season, Antonio, Cress, Dawson are getting on, Rice will get sold at some point and possibly the same for Bowen so we're going to need to invest in homegrown talent or bring through some youth. With the premium you need to pay for English players a keeper makes sense.

As for Sam Johnstone I said on Gonzo's video about him. When he was on loan at Aston Villa and playing for West Brom in the Premier League I thought he was really good. However he has been shocking this season. Rather stay away from him.

A strong goalscorer is worth how many points a year? Nobody would be unhappy if the highest earner is a striker. A strong goalkeeper can also be worth the same amount of points, why the debate so a specialised position? Pay the man his wages, he is top class.

We have 4 world class players: Rice, Zuoma, Bowen and Areola. Pay him.
If (!) the bloke gets us a long way in the Europa League and even wins it and we want to be a regular European club, then Areola is worth every penny. Every team in football or hockey that wins things has an elite keeper that wins you a few points you maybe didn't deserve.
