I think it's unfair to omit the fact that they signed him the season after he was dropped by Brighton in favour of Jason Steele, who get relegated from the championship with Sunderland the season before Brighton signed him. So Chelsea signed essentially a second choice goalkeeper at a high midtable club, to be their number one.
