Bruno Fernandes began life under Ruben Amorim as one of the number 10s behind the striker, but with mounting injuries and a need to chase football matches, Amorim has pulled his captain into a deeper midfield role to great effect. In fact with Bruno in this deeper role, Manchester United have actually won 64% of their matches – compared to just 28% when Bruno plays as a 10.

But why is this the case? What has actually changed? In this video, Statman Dave analyses Bruno Fernandes’ new role under Ruben Amorim and explains why this could be the best version of the player yet…

  1. The fact that without Bruno MU would be sunk still seems to be missed by so called fans and many pundits. I really wonder if these 'fans' have a brain when I listen to the fantasy world they live in. Bruno is the GOAT for MU this season, last season and season before.

  2. This is why Scholes/Carrick were so good for us back then. Many teams park the bus so having deeper maestros conducting the orchestra from further out is more effective.

  3. Ugarte and Bruno now playing really well together. First couple of attempts were derided by pundits but now it’s working where are these so called experts?

  4. Truth is the squad severely lacks confidence , and quality to an extent plus the injuries to the likes of licha-Mainoo, and Bruno is covering for the whole spine, the squad still needs a defender who can progress, a deep ball progressing midfielder, either by carrying or breaking lines, and ab experienced striker. Because ideally if we fill these gaps, Bruno as a 10 will still bring the best out of him despite the dribbling argument which I think is over estimated, I think Bruno is still a good ball carrying dribbler, but loses the ball because we don't transition in numbers and he gets isolated, whereas if Bruno carries in a transition in numbers, he can still move with quick passes and third man runs like he did under Ole.

  5. The one common theme here (with 1 exception which I'll come back to), is these attacking midfielders typically dropped back to play into a midfield 3. Even the ones at teams who play 3(5) at the back.
The exception is the early Scholes/Keane partnership. Although fullback's & wingers did a lot more defending going backwards then. Also Fergie added an extra midfielder for harder games (a Fletcher or Gibson) & eventually moved to a 3 after a failed attempt with Veron.
Bruno is not good enough off the ball to play deeper in a 2. I don't mean he doesn't work hard because he does, he's just a technically bad defender. Bad at tracking runners, awful at pressing even in the 10, which only gets worse deeper. He has a habit of doing random crazy things when deep, like backheels & weird loopy passes. Because he's an attacker. He's almost as easy to run through in centre midfield as Eriksen. He cannot play their long term outside a few 'easier' matches. We've seen this with Amorim & Goncalves. He only used him deep in a 3 or in easier games.

  6. Everytime I hear some fans say Bruno isn't good enough for Man utd baffles me…rival fans I can understand it's jealousy or just cluelessness but some of our fans do embarrass us more than the team

  7. Part of the reason for Bruno's recent success is because there really isnt any attacking output from anyone else. With Amad injured getting Bruno in position to score or create has become the ONLY reliable player for Man Utd to score goals.

Ironically to do that Man Utd have started often pushing their number 10s further forwards (When it's not Eriksen) to create that space which is starting to help them get in goal scoring positions more often too.

  8. Don’t know why we do this, but we have had a couple of good performers as well as Bruno that need praise. The likes of Amad, Nous, Ugarte and De Ligt have all been very good.

  9. Bruno Fernandes is definitely a legend and a hero for this club, IDC what other people say. But it's sad to think that he might leave the club anytime soon because of his age. I feel like we should start to search for someone who is as good as him maybe Arda Guler or Nico Paz.

  10. Talkin about Bruno in a vaccin he sound like a great player, putting it in context he is quite a trash player. He had many talented players around him and they looked like trash. Let's be realistic calling Bruno world class and while UTD is in 13th sums up the exact reaaon why Bruno is not as good as the "stats" say. He needs to move on hopefully he can find a club thag thinks he is good enough which seems to be absolutely minimal.

  11. I have watched a fair amount if Nottingham Forest this season, and i believe Gibbs white could be a great (eventual) replacement for Bruno.
What i noticed is he picks up similar positions to bruno, and the most impressive thing was his off ball work rate. Gibbs white, covered the pitch filling in for fallbacks and midfielders that progressed higher up the pitch due to some of his brilliant play. I wasn't sure why he was hyped so much, but after really studying him, gibbs white is a very close player to bruno. I'm wondering wether we could play one high and one deep, with both of them able to rotate during games🤔 A dream i suspect will not even come close to happening.
