James Walter “Buddy” McGirt is a celebrated figure in the world of boxing, both as a former professional boxer and a highly respected trainer. He competed from 1982 to 1997, securing world championships in two weight classes: the IBF junior welterweight title in 1988 and the WBC and lineal welterweight titles from 1991 to 1993.

After retiring from the ring, McGirt transitioned into a successful career as a boxing trainer. He has worked with numerous world champions, including Arturo Gatti, Antonio Tarver, Hasim Rahman, Paulie Malignaggi, and Sergey Kovalev. His expertise and dedication earned him the prestigious Trainer of the Year award in 2002 from the Boxing Writers Association of America. Currently, he is coaching WBO middleweight champion Janibek Alimkhanuly.

  1. The most surprising thing I learned from Buddy's Boxing insights and the interview was the fact that he had a 6 hour train ride round trip to Jersey for training at 18. I'd take my training pretty serious if I traveled 3hrs to get there. Also his mafia ties and admiration for Don King were surprising. If somebody paid my medical bills I'd feel indebted too.🥊
