José María Giménez de Vargas (born José María Giménez de Vargas; born January 20, 1995, Toledo, Canelones department) is a Uruguayan footballer, defender of the club Atletico Madrid and the national team of Uruguay.

Jose made his debut for Danubio on November 17, 2012 in a match against River Plate. In total for the “Danube” he spent sixteen matches of the Uruguayan championship.

On April 25, 2013, Atletico Madrid reached an agreement with Danubio on the transfer of an eighteen-year-old player, the transaction amount was 1 million euros. Jose joined his new club at the beginning of the 2013/14 season. He made his debut in the championship of Spain on September 14 in a match with Almeria. The first goal for Atlético scored on December 6, 2014 in the match against Elche.

José was part of the Uruguayan youth team, which won the silver medal of the 2013 Youth World Cup. He made his debut for the national team of Uruguay in September 2013 in a match against the Colombian national team. Subsequently, he played for the national team three more times. Oscar Tabares challenged Jimenez to a friendly match against Austria (1: 1) on March 5, 2014, despite the player’s lack of playing practice at the club. Jimenez also entered the list of Uruguayans to participate in the 2014 World Cup. Jimenez performed very well at the tournament, Uruguayans reached the 1/8 finals, where they lost to the Colombian team. After that, Jimenez was one of the best players in the Asian Friendlies Series. At the end of 2014, Jimenez, together with his Atletico partner Diego Godin (who became the captain of the national team during the 2014 World Cup), was recognized as the best footballer of Uruguay among those who play outside Uruguay itself.

In the summer of 2019, Jose Maria was invited to the team to participate in the America’s Cup, which took place in Brazil. In the second match in the group against Japan, he scored a goal in the 65th minute, and the teams drew 2: 2.
