On 29th September 2020 Man City announced the signing of centre back Ruben Dias from Benfica for just over £61m, the second largest fee in their history. The 23 year old defender was walking into a club recovering from a chastening 2019/20 season that had seen them finish 18 points behind Liverpool and once again exit the Champions League at the quarter final stage.

Having conceded 35 League goals that campaign, the most since Guardiola’s first in the Premier League, and already been thrashed 5-2 by Leicester City at the Etihad, all eyes were on Dias. It’s fair to say there was a certain amount of skepticism. After all he’d never played outside of Portugal or progressed past the Champions League groups, leaving plenty of people wondering whether he was the man to solidify a shaky defence and become Kompany’s long term heir. Jamie Carragher went as far to say that if it didn’t work out it could be “the end of the Pep project.”

Under 8 months later, Man City are Premier League and Carabao Cup Champions, with a debut Champions League final to look forward to in a matter of hours. A series of magnificent defensive displays ensure that Ruben Dias, recently named Football Writers Men’s Player Of The Year, is the favourite for PFA Player Of The Year too.

Today on FD Explained we want to analyze the rise of Ruben Dias. Who is he, what makes him so special and what does the future hold for him? Let’s get started…

  1. As someone who watches Manchester city every weekend, I want to say he’s started to be overrated tbh he’s a good defender but why all this praise? The whole team is killing it not just him. Watch In 2-3 years yall will see him in the decline and ask what happened to him. Whoever praised him so highly I know you don’t watch MC and he got mopped the last 3 games in the BPL lol what about those performances?

  2. I think he deserves Pots, when he came in, he just transformed City's defence and made John Stones good, he has leadership mentality and is only 24, well done to him, from an Everton fan

  3. Never doubt the Benfica academy. Dias hasnt improved, he's the exact same player he was in Portugal. The whole "Premier League proven" debate is pure nonsense and it always comes up.

  4. I love him because he was a great for FPL and because his great defending calmness with great leadership skills
And I saw one his interview and he is honest and cool guy

  5. Hey Zack yes u Zack its Jorge Jesus not Rorge Resus hes portuguese not spaniard and also its pronounced magalens not magaliks next time u do video on a person start to have clue about the people he now instead of speaking nonsense about it

  6. You now Ruben has the same story like Ronaldo both came from Portugal and they both played in the same city Manchester(Ronaldo United Ruben city)

  7. The fact that Ruben Dias speaks perfect English is essential in him being a leader in England. Without English ability he would just be a follower, and we would not be talking about him the way we are right now!!!

  8. @Football Daily the rise of Ruben Dias????? I am a Benfica fan I watched this kid grow and develop into a world class defender at benfica, he did not rise at city he arrived at city and imposed his personality.. You guys dont know shit, watch some football besides the premier league maybe

  9. I miss him. Happy he's showing his mark where he is. He would have been captain of Benfica for a long time to come, but you know, we're a mess, and it's good he left to have a successful career showing his best stuff.

  10. Great content as usual, but one piece of feedback is to tone down the stats a little. When it's numbers overload without any context, it devalues the stats of significance

  11. One of the best Football Daily videos I have watched since I subscribed. I play with Ruben Dias on Football Manager and it is great to have insight on why he's such a leader and uniting influence. Kudos, Zach!

  12. A life without Jesus-Christ is a wasted life , people!

Believe in Christ now while there's still time, and get your sins washed away by His redeeming Blood.

You are being lied to by this satanic self-deceived world, the devil is lying to us

Only Jesus Christ The savior is going to get us out of this whole mess. No one else can, not even ourselves

The Bible says in Mark 8:36 ''For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? ''

  13. Benefica make premier league champions. Won’t be surprised if City buy another benefica starlet… someone like Darwin Nunes
