Jordan Henderson managed to get himself a yellow card while he wasn’t even on the pitch as Ajax edged their way into the last-16 of the Europa League tie.

Henderson started on the bench for the second leg against Union Saint-Gilloise in the Netherlands on Thursday night, which the Dutch side went into with a 2-0 lead.

The home side made life very difficult for them, as that advantage was quickly wiped away during a disastrous first half.

Kevin Mac Allister, brother of Liverpool star Alexis, headed home in the 16th minute before Davy Klaasen was sent off for deliberate handball, and Promise David converted the subsequent penalty.

Things got heated in the second half when Akinpelu fouled Ajax’s Jorthy Mokio, leading to a scuffle between both sets of players as Saint-Gilloise’s Sofiane Boufal refused to hand over the ball.

The pushing and shoving spilled over to the dugouts, where Henderson came racing over to get involved.

The melee was eventually calmed down whilst Henderson could be seen making a ‘keep talking’ gesture on the touchline.

He was one of several players shown a yellow card by referee Chris Kavanagh, a seventh booking of the season for the 34-year-old.

Henderson was still brought on to help his side find a winner, and they did just that.

Kenneth Taylor spared their blushes by converting the game’s second penalty in the third minute of extra time after Christian Burgess’ handball.
