Having left Manchester United in 1999, Peter Schmeichel joined rivals Manchester City in 2002. Gary Neville refused to shake his former teammate’s hand when the two captains met in the tunnel ahead of the Manchester derby in November 2002.

not nice but not surprising
proper captain.
Gary was going to war
City is still stupid club without history and fans
Surely Gary could have shook his hand and still went out and gave it 100%. To me this shows his immaturity not dedication. True professionals have respect for each on and off the pitch
Gary Teacher's Pet Neville
Gary just sulking cause United bought in Bartez to replace Shmeichal lol
must of shouted at him haha
Schmeichel over Neville any day
Was literally just asking him to move 🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
classic of rivalry on the pitch. I beg both of them must be laughing now looking at this clips after they had retired. 🤣
Schmeichel is a gentleman.
I didn’t know boris Johnson was that fit before 🙂
Why?
Not everyone will accept to shake a gloved hand.
❤️ best keeper
The way it should be.
🥶
City went out that day and battered them 3 -1 Neville had a right stinker that game.
All the people claiming Schmeichel didnt ask for a handshake, you can literally see his hand move towards Gary's hand resulting in just grabbing his wrist seconds after he says "do ya mind?" didn't literally ask for it but he definitely wanted and intended to shake hands whereas Gary had other ideas. Even Schmeichel was surprised as he just stares him down while he switches. Superb dedication to United
Rival on the game. Friend out of the game.
Rival on the game. Friend out of the game.
My captain
because he didn’t shake big petes hand, the goat made him pay
Smacked arse
Judas
There's a lot of people ignoring logic and easily found evidence in these comments. Regardless of the misunderstanding over United being on the wrong side of the tunnel. The fact still remains that once Neville realised who it was, he realised he didn't want to shake the hand of that person. And that should be obvious when you see his face in the tunnel after the encounter, how rattled he was during the game with the mistake he made for one of the goals and an emotionally charged quote he made on the issue:
"He left Man United at the age of whatever he was, 35, and he said he was retiring, basically to go abroad," former teammate Gary Neville told the Quickly Kevin, Will He Score? podcast."
At the time when he came back, he played for Manchester City. You can't play for Manchester City."
I'm a United fan and I can't play for Manchester City, I can't play for Leeds and I can't play for Liverpool. That's just written in stone."
You just don't play for those clubs, irrespective of what happens."
He'd won the treble with United in '99, said that he was retiring… he should have carried on playing for United for the next two or three years if that was the case. We struggled for a keeper between Peter and Edwin (Van der Sar)."
Even the usually calm and pleasant Solskjaer had some strong words to say on him leaving in 99. Yeah some players shook his hand there. But as a whole, the squad was hurt by his retirement U-turn and the very long and damaging goalkeeper transitional phase that decision put the club in. Especially Neville. It wasn't just an awkward moment of mixed signals going back and forth
Gary trying to look hard
Hey knows that Manchester is red and can't be blue
Peter Schmeichel is the only player that ever frightened Roy Keane.. Let that sink in.
Gary Neville just showed how pathetic he is
That man u squad was JACKED
Gary looked scared more than anything lol
Such a w…… you can be devoted to your team, you can want to win at all costs but you shouldn't lose your grace, manners and connection to other human beings whilst doing it. Refusing to shake a person's hand says that winning a football match is more important than that person. That's the same tribal thinking that gets fans fighting and leads to death on the terraces.
That was not a handshake, that was a big bloke moving a little bloke out the way lol
Man that utd team
Always the Gary Neville show 😂😂😂😂
I really didn't know Schmeichel had crossed derby lines. Back in those days it still had the remnants of meaning something. Now, foreign mercenaries switch from week to week depending on who is paying more.
In the days when utd turned up.
That lemon-face from Gary was hilarious 😅
Can someone explain for me?
Was there a trouble when he moved to other team? Maybe because its in same city?
Years later gary gets blanked by Ronaldo , karma lol
schmeichel never made any attempt to greet some of the other man united legnds he played alongside before he went to Gary
We all hate our rival teams and players until the international games and then all England fans are friends. That always amuses me
Manchester… a small team for small players.
Nevile, bartrez, Hargreaves, scholes, van nesteloory, giggs…. What a line up
Neville seems to be a curse whenever this happens, it’s always when he’s at the front, has something to do with an ex teammate, he’s reluctant/frigid to greet them, and the match ends in a loss to United with 3-1 being the score. The superstition is real
