Not fair, Terry was a great defender but no contest compared to VVD. VVD is undoubtedly world class but for its time the Chelsea team under Mourinho was exceptionally good, probably surpassing the Liverpool teams which VVD has played in. The argument is like saying John Stones is better than VVD because Manchester City have won more trophies.

VVD changed defending, Terry was a thug who played in an era when defenders stayed back and didn't have to play the ball. The very idea of Terry trying to ping a diagonal ball on to a strikers head to score is laughable

Nostalgia bias is a real thing.
One was part of a defense who only conceded 15 goals in the league and the other who's best defensive record was 22 goals in 2018/19, JT clears.
Pep and Klopp was better rivalry because it was just all out heavy metal football between two attacking teams and games that were sheer entertainment. Wenger and Ferguson was more about "okay we are away let's draw this one". Those teams including Arsenal's Invincibles were drawing games and putting people to sleep left right and center.

Outside of England the vast majority will put VVD ahead of Terry. Narrowly came second in the balon dor and has been an absolute joke of a defender for 10 years. The guy literally went 14 months without being dribbled past. He reads the game incredible well, commands the back line, is unbeatable in the air and can pass as well as a midfielder.
I'm with van Hecke in most of this except on the Wenger/Furgie vs Pep/Clop. "I'm not sure" too😂.

Van Hecke has a good personality especially for his age. VVD is the best defender to ever grace a football pitch. If you look at it individually its not even a debate. You can argue team achievements but after this year and hopefully a couple more trophies then that argument becomes less valid.
In the history of football there has only ever been one defender better than Van Dyck and that is Maldini, Terry was nowhere near these levels
