Do all centre-backs have to be tall? That’s the question facing Manchester United and their new 5ft9in centre-back, Lisandro Martinez.

Traditionally centre backs are the biggest outfield players in the team, but do they need to be?

With the help of some professionals in the game, Sarah Shephard explains that a good centre-back doesn’t worry about their size. Illustrated by Marco Bevilacqua.

  1. You are trying your best to motivate those who are short, but it wouldn't help them.
If you are playing against tall players and come a cross above your reach then you are done.

  2. They used to have a length minimum at Barcelona for all players coming from la Masia. If you were too short, you were kicked out. Cruijf removed that silly rule. Thinking a defender should be tall is a very very old fashioned way of looking at players. If it was that easy, other teams should have been able to beat Barcelona consistently. Technique and timing is much more relevant.

  3. Even azpilicueta is considered short but I think everyone knows how good he was at CB before his general decline. Cahil was the typical CB physically but outperformed by Azpi when they were all CBs. In fact Azpi at CB was one of the most undroppable players in the entire squad. He is only slightly taller than Martinez but significantly shorter than Traditional CBs and also shorter than Mee

  4. I believe Tifo understands that their viewers are not only from the UK with Imperial units but also from the EU, Asia and other countries with Metric units and also it's not comfortable to stop the video, go to Google, transfer 5,9 inch to cm and then come back to continue watching video!!! Please, somehow mention, show, write a metric equivalent to imperial units, I believe you can do that!!! Take an example from a US car reviewer Doug DeMuro who always shows numbers in inch/cm, mph/kph, pound/kg, ft-lb/nm!!!

  5. Difficult start what are this guy talking about he had a bad game against Brentford and a bad game against Brighton and he had 8 and 9 out of 10 performances against Liverpool Southampton Leicester and Arsenal he have been really good so far. Why upload this if the video is outdated and this was made after the Brentford game and before the Liverpool game.

  6. Seemingly, MUnited have improved after they removed Maguire from the starting XI… Sometimes as a ball club you have to accept our losses… in this case, a £80M loss.

  7. Thiago Silva is 5'11" and Marquinhos is 6'0". They are considered shorts for their position, if look at it. But they are quite fast, they tackle very well and even have good position for aerial defensive and offensive plays.

  8. Positioning, timing to be right place on the right time is a basic for the defend It's more base on psychic ability that can measure situation what might happen in curial Time. This is more base on intuition and sensitive of the sorrounding. Maguire don't have any of that

  9. There is this lie that repeatedly gets told that Martinez had a difficult start in the premier league. Those who actually watched the games in question know that this is a lie.

The lie got spun to perpetuate the myth that his height made him unsuitable to the premier league as they had wanted to believe. I'd invite these folk to go re watch those games. Even in his "worst" game he was still dropping a 7/10. Go watch the games.

  10. It’s like “do you have to be tall to play basketball?”

No, but it certainly helps, I’m two minutes in and the best points have already been made. It depends on how the club plays, the role of the Defender, and whatever works as an advantage.

  11. He played for Ajax in the Dutch league.Dutch people are the tallest and so are the players. And now he came to England only to have people and pundits complaining about his height?? Come on now.He is playing good at Man Utd.Made more tackles than Maguire did.Won more aerial duels. What more do you want to complain?? Now to all haters out there, tell me now.Was I wrong on this one?Or is it just the fact that you refuse to admit it?

  12. It’s hilarious that we looking to a relegated Ben mee & a Swansea city coach for advice and insight on being a limited defender.😂😂
