Poland defender Robert Gumny showed mixed feeling on Friday when asked about Germany’s early exit from the World Cup.
Gumny, who plays at Augsburg in the Bundesliga, claimed that while it was definitely a huge surprise to see the four-time world champions “get knocked out of the group stage”, it was also source of “a great and proud feeling to go back to Germany knowing that Poland has advanced” but Hansi Flick’s side didn’t.
Poland advanced to the knock-out stage of the tournament after finishing second in Group C behind Argentina, level on points with Mexico but with a better goal difference.
They will meet defending champions France on Sunday.
Germany were eliminated in the group stage for the second straight World Cup after finishing third on goal difference in Group E behind Japan and Spain.
