Modrić is just a different player. It just takes one moment to realize that no other squad in this current World Cup has a midfielder like him (yes, in spite of De Bruyne, Hazard, Pulisić, Rabiot, Busquets, Fernandez). Even Messi, since from my humble perspective he is not as crucial in the National Squad as Modrić is. Modrić tends to deliver an outstanding performance and be crucial for both Madrid and Croacia, whereas Messi's performances tend to be better when he is surrounded by his comrades either in Barcelona or PSG.
I see Croatia reaching the final stages of the World Cup again, in spite of the fact that Rakitić, Vrsaljko, Mandzukić and Rebić are not around. Kovačić, Perisić, Kramarić, Lovren, Brozović and Sosa are more than decent players as well.
