There is a misinformation in the bike course. The part with going down to Tahiche and then back and up to Teseguite comes BEFORE climbing up to los Valles not at the end coming down Arrieta . In fact you have to ride twice up to Teseguite.
Full of nuggets of information for anyone contemplating IM Lanza for first time.
In particular, Paul Cardwell Hounam swim familiarisation sessions were marvellous as if coming from places where tide comes straight in/out, knowing tides on Playa Grande go more like left to right, means you know when to dig in and when it’s a bit easier which can add or save many minutes from your swim time.
Knowing bike course is invaluable eg label on bike stem with interim bike cutoff times/locations if this tough course will be a challenge for you.
The wind was mentioned repeatedly in this youtube video but beware if under 60kg, while the headwinds are troublesome, the crosswinds are really scary so take every opportunity to go out on miserable windy days to train rather than rely on indoor turbo for strength.
While by all objective measures, this is a particularly tough IM course, if you get to start line at all, there’s a remarkably low DNF rate, presumably as you can’t “wing it” in Lanzarote. As per those who’ve supported IM over a long time, in other events, there’s the ironman “death march” but in Lanzarote, those surviving to the run are all moving steadily if slowly.
As a two time veteran of Oliver Harkin’s Lanzarote training camp, riding the course is “gold”
on race day. But, if you cannot come out until race week, a good substitute early in race week is rent a car & park in Teguise, to do the 50k northern loop from about 80k to 130k incorporating Los Valles climb, descent to Haria, Climb to Mirador, descent to Arrieta, and the climb through Teseguite to Teguise (this 50k being by far toughest part of 180k).
It’s obviously an insane event as 180km distance is never considered the challenge – every commentator only focuses on heat, hills and wind, but the satisfaction of a finish at Lanzarote is hard to beat.
Definitely a bucket list one for me
