Rumors are circulating Chicago Fire social media that Aaron Long is in talks to join the Men in Red. We all expected new Head Coach and Director of Sport Gregg Berhalter to recruit some of his former USMNT players, but I don’t think the 32 year old defender is what we had in mind.
His age is against him along with his injury history and salary demands, but he does bring veteran MLS experience and is familiar with how Berhalter likes to coach and play. Best case scenario: Long is a serviceable replacement for Rafael Czichos at the right price. Worst case scenario: Long’s age finally catches up with him, and the Fire are stuck with another bad contract that doesn’t contribute.
