No. Penny Hardaway wasn’t at the level of peak Kobe. So much of Hardaway’s game disappeared after the injury. Yes, he was an extraordinary passer. But he didn’t have the offensive scoring abilities of Kobe Bryant. Nor, most importantly, did he have that killer instinct or psycho competitiveness.

As much as that team was one of my favorites, there was no way they were going to win a championship without adding one more key player. Shaq did not find his real fire to be a champion until he started playing with Kobe. Penny wouldn't have given him the same pushback that Kobe had with Shaq.
