Wasn’t there a Chinese speed skater in the recent Winter Olympics who did something similar but on a larger scale?
Iirc it was the 1500m event and she used a burst of power in the beginning laps to essentially lap the other skaters and then maintained pace with them till she won.
There was more to the strat since she deliberately chose to continue skating at the back of the pack after she pulled one lap ahead which helped with conserving her stamina after that powerful burst and also tricked her opponents into forgetting about her but still
This looks like taunting, but it is not cheating at all
これはヤン選手が金メダルを獲るための作戦ではなく、
本来の実力では2位になれない中国人選手を2位にするための作戦です。
ヤン選手は普通に走っても1位ですが、リ選手は井上選手に勝てるか微妙です。
井上選手を騙せれば銀メダルが獲れます。作戦は成功しました。

It's a great tactics to win both gold and silver medal for the team of China
lol.. Korean didn't get any medals. When they heard the bell, they thought this is the last one for them but it's not. That bell ringer is for Yang. Those Korean skaters got confused then the other Chinese skater knew they are not finished yet and passed them to take the lead. Eventually she won the Silver medal.
The Korean coach couldn't believe what they saw and filed the complaint to review but of course got overruled.

At the start of the race everyone saw her going ahead , why didn't anyone notice? It is in front of them, the race just started and she flew off
