Bruno Fernandes shown first red card of Man Utd career for reckless tackle on James Maddison before Kobbie Mainoo limps off to compound nightmare first-half vs Tottenham

Fernandes was sent off for a high challenge on Maddison in Sunday’s blockbuster Premier League clash at Old Trafford. The United captain appeared to slip as he went for the ball, but then kicked out needlessly to take out Maddison, who was left writhing in pain on the turf.

  1. It wasn’t a nightmare challenge, but it could’ve been worse – hence the red card. But no complaints. We would have lost the match anyway.

I love Bruno but he needs to be more careful with the challenges as the captain. Focus on putting in a good performance! Pathetic display from the team. Embarrassed all of us fans.

  2. Change the title. Certainly not undeserving! It's a red within the laws of the game for serious foul play. You even stated yourself: "The United captain appeared to slip as he went for the ball, but then kicked out needlessly to take out Maddison, who was left writhing in pain on the turf." What does that say to you? He had no control of where that foot was going to land and there was intent to take out Maddison because the ball was long gone = Serious foul play = Red card. Nothing more to it than that.

  3. This is a judgment call by the match official (Chris). A different official might have called it differently, including the VAR official. Reasonable people can disagree on whether it was yellow or red.

But since it’s Chris’s decision to make, it’s final. No obvious error. No need to overturn it via VAR.
