Jordan Pickford saved an Anthony Gordon penalty while Everton had a goal ruled out and a huge penalty appeal of their own waved away during an eventful 0-0 draw with Newcastle at Goodison.
The Blues thought they had taken the lead after 18 minutes when Abdoulaye Doucouré headed in James Garner’s inch-perfect cross, only for a VAR to intervene and chalk it off.
The visitors were then awarded a penalty but Pickford came out victorious against former Everton forward Gordon, who fluffed his lines in front of the Gwladys Street end.
The major talking point of the second period came when Dan Burn appeared to bring down Dominic Calvert-Lewin, denying the Toffees’ No.9 a tap-in in the process, but referee Craig Pawson chose not to point to the spot and the spoils were shared.

We need to write to PGMOL again regarding Pawson. Every single time he refs one of our games there's a controversial decision that goes against us

Toon fan – a real one – been hoping Everton pick up points, you’ll be ok just about – think our play generally was a bit lacklustre and awkward, our own was quite soft and almost got missed that’s why we have VAR and your pen shout was correct end of day foul on burn was reason. Plus Calvin had a bad game, awful performance by him again and he always tries to go to ground in the box when he’s played bad. 0-0 was fair but if we woke up a bit and had a striker we’d have scored I think. Everton don’t seem to be able to get in the game much. This new stadium will be a fresh start for you. Good support by home fans, we expected that and you successfully put Gordan off from sealing the match. Well done anyway.

That was such a bad penalty. Pickford clearly showed where he's diving to yet Gordon still sends it his way. I don't think the lad will take another one, ever.

Either our squad isn’t good enough and Dyche is getting the best out of them playing the way he does, or Dyche isn’t good enough. Probably a bit of both.
