Greg benched Wes and he benched Gio — knowing that it could affect the results of impending matches — that's integrity, no one is bigger than the team. "Ego" has nothing to do with half-assing your way through practice and scrimmages before the biggest game in 4 years.

I still don't hear any pundits talking about how Gregg fucked this up from the get go. He handled the initial conversation all wrong. Often it's not what you say but how you say it.
You don't tell a 20 year old kid who's in the top 13 (at least) you're going to have a "very limited role" and leave it there. You tell him here's the role I envision for you and I know it's not what you were hoping for but you'll be the first attacker off the bench and we will need to rest legs in group play so I'll find you a start either in midfield or up front where you'll have an opportunity to show your quality with a possible full 90. Then we'll reevaluate going forward.
Boom. Tough conversation over with some hope sprinkled on top to keep your player motivated AND you set the team up for the best chance at a deep run.
I have to use these concepts quite often just coaching youth club teams. It's not that hard really.

The funny thing is for me, Berhalter shows a ton of promise as a manager. He obviously made mistakes. But he seems to learn from them. I think it would have been better if he was an assistant (at this level) vs the head manager. Then he could learn more, see more. There's that bit of day to day that he needs. The Reyna issue is bad to me- totally avoidable situations. The higher he goes the more difficult players he will have to manage because the players will be more demanding and hold HIM accountable too. This is the difference between the current level of US players vs him and the past – where he was in second divisions. It is also the difference between the risk of relegation and comfort of "ah well, better luck next year." Different mentalities. So he has a lot to learn.
And the leadership summit thing… altogether it sounds like a bag of d….
Berhalter needs to step down end of story, just not qualified at this level.

Berhalter needs to go. But not fully because of this "Gio-Gate" issue. But FULLY because he sucks, and is not the future of this team. Gregg "the effing gym coach" Berhalter is a garbage coach. He needed to go since last year. This team and this program is good enough and has enough exposure to merit a true legitimate, respected, and recognized international head coach (recognized as such by his peers). We have the infrastructure and money do acquire one. Listen very closely to what Louis van Gaal said, and read between the lines. He said much more than we didn't "adjust" or that we were completely "out-coached." Van Gaal is sending the USSF a signal – that he is willing to entertain an offer, an opportunity to coach this team. Either way….. Berhalter MUST GO.
So many flies on the wall overheard this private conversation that it’s retelling has become fact. The only people that know the conversation are Gio and Gregg.
Who cares, their main priority should be tracking runners into the box. If they want to spend the next 4 years worrying about this childish stuff (coach and player) they’ll have the same results in 26, struggle to score and too much hubris to adapt in game when smarter teams are exploiting them.
