A much-changed Everton side bowed out of the Carabao Cup on penalties for the second season in a row after a 1-1 draw with Southampton at Goodison Park.

Despite being short of options due to illness and injuries, the Blues created a host of chances throughout, taking a deserved lead on 20 minutes through Abdoulaye Doucoure’s close-range header.

Saints skipper Taylor Harwood-Bellis levelled with a header of his own just beyond the half-hour mark, but Everton had plenty of opportunities to win the contest, with Jesper Lindstrøm wondering how he didn’t get off the mark for the Toffees.

It meant the tie was decided on penalties and, after the first 11 spot-kicks were converted, Ashley Young saw his effort saved by Alex McCarthy to see the visitors prevail 6-5.

  1. Everton just manage to avoid relegation by the skin of their teeth last season. But looking likely Everton would be one of the 3 teams to be relegated come end of the season. Its so sad Everton has drop really badly. Actually in the last 6 to 7 years, they really sign bad players who only went to Everton for the money and doesnt have any passion to play for this once great club. Unfortunately, the call for Sean Dyce to leave would be loud now. He has done his best with the lousy players in the team.

  2. Notice Young, a supposedly experienced player, has no control over his penalty whatsoever. This player has now cost us a derby match, the game against Brighton, and now our place in the Carabao cup, all because he's a favourite of Dickhead Dyche, who must be sacked or we'll be so far astray at the bottom of the League our position will be irretrievable.
