My hypothesis for Flick's failure with the german national team has been that he was put under insane pressure by politics (LBQT+, wokeness , rainbow nonsense etc) so he could never really focus on football. WC in Qatar was a desaster because of this. Now it looks like he is slowly recovering from this trauma as he is allowed to really do his job again in Barcelona.
