Virgil Van Dijk’s Uncertain Future; Will Liverpool Sign Goncalo Inacio?
Liverpool have made a strong start to the Premier League season under new manager Arne Slot, with their defense remaining solid and yet to concede a goal. Virgil van Dijk has been key to this success, demonstrating his leadership and skill on the field.
However, despite his excellent form, Van Dijk’s future at Anfield is uncertain. He is in the final year of his contract, and no extension has been signed yet.
Van Dijk is currently Slot’s only left-sided center-back, as Jarell Quansah, Joe Gomez, and Ibrahima Konate are all better suited to the right side.
Due to this uncertainty, Liverpool has focused its search for a new left-center-back on Sporting CP’s Goncalo Inacio. Although Liverpool has been linked with Inacio for nearly two years, no significant progress has been made.
The Reds considered signing him this summer but were put off by his £51 million (€60 million) release clause. However, Sporting CP might lower their asking price to around £38 million, making Inacio a more realistic target for Liverpool.
Liverpool will face tough competition from Newcastle United, while Manchester United had previously shown interest.
At 23, Inacio offers versatility, being able to cover the left-back position as well. His performances under Ruben Amorim at Sporting CP have been impressive, contributing to the team’s recent success. His ball-playing ability and adaptability could make him a great fit for Slot’s tactics.
However, given the prolonged interest in Inacio, any potential move should be approached with caution. While he remains a promising target, only clear developments will determine whether Liverpool’s pursuit of him will materialize.
