Leverkusen’s Last-Minute Thriller: A Season Opener Full of Surprises

The 2024/25 Bundesliga season kicked off with a bang as reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen visited Borussia Mönchengladbach. What was supposed to be a routine victory for Leverkusen turned into a rollercoaster of emotions, capped off by a dramatic last-minute twist that left fans breathless.

Leverkusen, riding high on a 34- BUNDESLIGA game unbeaten streak, started strong. Granit Xhaka, who spent four years at Gladbach, opened the scoring with a thunderous left-footed strike from 25 meters and a speed of 129km/h that left the Gladbach keeper helpless. Xhaka, out of respect for his former club, celebrated quietly, but the message was clear: Leverkusen meant business.

Florian Wirtz doubled the lead before halftime, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to slot the ball into the net. At 2-0, it seemed like Leverkusen was cruising to another easy victory. However, Gladbach had other plans. After a nervy VAR check, Nico Elvedi pulled one back for the Foals, and suddenly the game was on.

Tim Kleindienst thought he had equalized for Gladbach, but VAR intervened, ruling out the goal for a foul in the build-up. The Borussia-Park erupted in frustration, but the home side didn’t give up. Kleindienst finally got his goal in the 85th minute, leveling the score and setting up a nail-biting finish.

As the game dragged into an extraordinary eleven minutes of extra time, it looked like Gladbach might snatch a point. But Leverkusen, true to their reputation for late-game heroics, won a penalty deep in injury time. Jonas Omlin saved Wirtz’s initial spot-kick, but the rebound fell perfectly for the Leverkusen star to tap in the winner.

Leverkusen’s 3-2 victory extends their unbeaten run to 35 Bundesliga games, proving once again that they are the team to beat. For Gladbach, it was a case of so close, yet so far. The Foals showed resilience and fight, but in the end, it was Leverkusen’s coolness under pressure that made the difference.

The season is just beginning, but if this match is any indication, we’re in for a thrilling ride. Football fans, buckle up—this is going to be a season to remember!
