100% agreed with you Geo. Paqueta’s quality of play is almost dependent on how much he can link up with Emerson. He and Kudus will interchange and he’ll have some license to float where the game calls for it. Kudus is genuinely world class, he needs the space to do his thing
Depends who we are playing IMO. Teams where we may expect to have 55-60%+ possession, paqueta drops in to the 8 and can be creative from deeper. When we need more defensive discipline we will see what we saw against Villa and have Summerville (most likely), coming off the bench.

Paqueta is an exceptional talent. I wish we had been able to sell him last summer. Because he’s a problem.
Actually don’t think Mo was anonymous in the first half. Villa’s tactics were clearly to foul him as often as possible. He was getting rugby tackled whenever he came near the ball. That it went on for so long was because the ref wouldn’t give a yellow. As soon as cash started to get tired though, Mo absolutely torched him.

It would be brave but I would be up for dropping Paq, putting Kudus in the 10 and Summerville on the left. Without a doubt Paq is a top player in moments but I can find him frustrating and hot headed. Seems crazy but could overall benefit the team performance.
Paq can’t tackle without fouling so wouldn’t want to see him start as a 6 or 8
Paqueta has got to play deeper to dictate the game – we need him on the ball. That leaves Fulkrug up top, Summerville-left, Kusus-centre, Bowen-right. Soucek is great when we need a bit of hight but he will not keep the game ticking like Paqueta.
We've never seen Bowen on the left hand side….maybe Kudus on the right and Bowen on the left would be better?! Bowen has a better body shape for going inside and outside than Kudus in my opinion, and is better than Kudus with his wrong foot.
Your views on Paqueta are stuck in the Moyes era "I'd like him to do what Moyes did" No no no!!!! At no point has Paqueta had an extended run in that position. If we want to dictate and create – Paqueta must play deep.

In a setup that was very challenging and isolating to a CF.
That suggests he’s done more than “alright” in that position. And I personally think he is more of a forward than a winger. I think he’s got out wide and as a CF.
I actually thought that was one of Moyes’ biggest mistakes last season, not sticking with Jarrod at CF, with Paqueta at LAM and Kudus at RAM. That front 3 was piss-takingly good at times.
Hi Geo…I think paqueta will have to be on the bench to start kudus (10) Summerville left Bowen right then a ST … behind them would be soler and Alvarez….. basically I would have paqueta as an impact sub. Know you’ll be saying wtf but that’s what I would do

I agree as I think kudus is far more consistent and more likely to produce the goods and yes Emerson and Pacquette do have chemistry and can be very obvious at times

I kind of feel that J-Lo had to set out conservatively on saturday to maintain the sense and feel of the team. Its one thing having a load of shiny new footballers and its another thing being a functioning and harmonious football team. Takes time.
what about a 3-5-2? It allows summerville to start on the left, kudus on the right, paqueta in the 10 role, and bowen as more of a wide forward. Lopetegui seemed to use a 3 back when he brought todibo on and this would allow kudus to play on both the wing and drift inside and have bowen cover. I think this allows lopetegui to get the best out of all of our players, hopefully also helping summerville get integrated

You are worried about Paqueta not being defensive enough, but Soucek and JWP aren't exactly super defensive either. Soucek spends most of his time in the opposition box, missing open goals. JWP is just invisible and Paqueta has great defensive stats

Personally I think we need to play Paqueta next to someone like Alvarez. Not being funny but can Paqueta do any worse than Soucek?
It's difficult to drop Paqueta because he is the person who creates and can see a defense splitting pass! I know he doesn't work as hard but Lopetegui needs to coach him on it! For teams we need to break down would see only 1 defensive midfielder and Paqueta as an 8. Higher ranked teams, Paqueta maybe on the bench but coming as an impact!

It's simple. Drop soucek. Summer ville left, kudus 10, paqueta just behind as an 8 with alvarez or Rodriguez
I'd go with a 4-3-3 formation with Paqueta in central midfield (and a bit of a free role) with Alvarez and Rodriquez as DM's and Kudus and Bowen narrow and either side of Fullkrug so they can link up and run past him to cause problems for defences.
Opposition teams wont like having the pace and the skill of Kudus & Bowen running at them & having a big target man like fullkrug will occupy at least 1 central defender and if the ball gets recycled to our midfield then having Paq there to use some of his samba flair will cause an extra problem for defences
Not ideal and agree it's a failure after what we have spent, but all the while the striker situation is as it is, I would go Summerville Paqueta Kudus with Bowen up top and on 60-70 mins take off the worst performer for Fullkrug/Antonio and shift around accordingly. Anyway, the decision could be made for us when Paqueta is suspended…

We ran a funky 4-3-3 that used Soucek as a false 9 and Paqueta as an attacking mid, leaving Rodriguez almost all alone in a mid block. In that respect, it was more like a 4-1-3-2, with Soucek and Antonio as strikers, and Paqueta as an attacking number 10. That's a whole lot of pressure on a CDM. In a conventional 4-3-3, we use Paqueta as an attacking 8… or switch him out with Soucek as a false 9, with Rodriguez/Alvarez as double pivots. In a conventional 4-2-3-1 setup, he's either forward 10 or a less pressing 8. In the Aston Villa game, either Paqueta or Soucek were playing well out of position… and the Villans attacked the midfield with impunity. It's pretty sad when Coufal goes way out to the middle to cover a counterattack.
The Brazil argument makes no sense because he was average for them and they were average at best when he played in a double pivot, now they don’t even play him like that. They start Gomes Bruno and Paqueta in a three, which is so different to having a “10” like Kudus.
People see him drop in as the spare man and think it’s the same as starting there, they also think that putting in a few tackles makes you defensively capable to screen a defence. Can’t believe this debate is still going on to be honest.
Solution might be easy, move Bowen to the left !
Maybe the best solution would be to go to three at the back. That would give us the necessary protection and allow us to play paqueta alongside rodriguez. Also you could then play kudus and bowen as double 10s behind a striker with the option of them roaming wide.
