In this age, the skillset required to play as fullback for a top club is having technical skills of a central midfielder plus also having good defensive positioning and reading of defensive situations. This is why AWB could never have been a long term solution for this role at United. It is also why you can’t easily repurpose a central midfielder like McTominay (for example) into this role because he does not have natural defensive instincts. A Collyer or Oyedele could be a good fit for this role. (With Dalot moving across to play on the left side and not knowing how long Shaw and Malacia will be available let alone be at peak conditioning)
